Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Pre-hire physical examinations and drug screening is required as set forth in the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company Safety Management System (SMS) Manual prior to employment.
The job requires extensive travel both by air and company vehicle in order to perform major mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on a scheduled and unscheduled basis. A valid driver’s license is required.
The GLDD Plant Mechanic will frequently handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 50 pounds and over for considerable distances.
You are required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
Work involves ascending and descending narrow vertical ladders or stagings, often while carrying tools, equipment and parts.
Work is performed inside and outside, underway and moored or in dry-dock, exposing you to the prevailing weather and sea conditions, noise, and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces.
Frequently, work is performed in cramped areas with minimum light and ventilation, and in areas with high temperatures.
You will be exposed to moving machinery and objects, noise and vibration from machinery, hot surface temperatures, and sharp edges.
Dirt, grease, dampness, exhaust and chemical fumes are frequently encountered.
Various personnel protective devices such as safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, safety harnesses etc are required by company safety policy to be worn when appropriate. Failure to comply with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company safety policies and regulations will result in immediate termination of employment.
