Job Description
We are seeking a professional and service-oriented Galley Utility to join a cruise ship and support the Galley and Food & Beverage operations.
The Galley Utility is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation in galleys and food outlets, including dishwashing, pot washing and sanitation of china, glassware and silverware. The position also supports the culinary team with basic food preparation and may assist other departments with operational duties when required.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Sous Chef and work under the supervision of the Executive Chef and Hotel Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean and maintain galleys and food outlets in accordance with schedules and HACCP standards.
- Perform pot washing, dishwashing and sanitation of china, glassware, silverware, pots and pans.
- Follow all Shipboard Sanitation, Health and Public Health Authority requirements.
- Clean and maintain electrical and mechanical galley equipment according to manufacturer instructions.
- Follow correct garbage separation, disposal and color-coding procedures.
- Safely store, use and dispose of cleaning chemicals according to company procedures.
- Ensure smooth availability of china, glassware and silverware during meal service.
- Maintain assigned lockers, cleaning equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Maintain sanitation logs and complete required documentation.
- Assist Chefs with basic food preparation, including peeling onions, garlic and vegetables.
- Report maintenance deficiencies and work orders to the Sous Chef and follow up as required.
- Assist with gangway duties, stores loading, garbage offloading and luggage handling when required.
- Support other departments as assigned.
- Deliver consistently high standards of guest and crew service.
Financial Responsibilities
- Use cleaning materials and consumables responsibly and cost-effectively.
- Minimize water consumption and prevent water damage to galley equipment.
- Minimize breakage of crockery and glassware.
- Treat all company property, equipment and supplies with care and respect.
Safety Responsibilities
- Wear and correctly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Follow safe lifting techniques at all times.
- Perform in-port manning duties as scheduled.
- Store equipment and cleaning materials safely when not in use.
- Follow safe operating procedures when handling galley equipment.
- Participate in guest and crew lifeboat drills and other emergency procedures.
- Follow all instructions provided on the vessel's Safety Card.
- Comply with all company safety, health, sanitation and environmental procedures.
Requirements
- Previous experience in a hotel, restaurant or hospitality environment; cruise ship experience is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of Public Health and Sanitation Regulations and Procedures is preferred.
- Good spoken English.
- Strong communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability and willingness to complete onboard HACCP training.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- Service-minded, friendly and outgoing personality.
- Strong teamwork and professional attitude.
- EU passport holder – mandatory due to internal regulations.
- Ability to work in a demanding international cruise environment.
