Trump Slaps 10% Global Tariff Using New Trade Law After Supreme Court Defeat photo

WASHINGTON, Feb 20 – U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will impose a 10% global tariff for 150 days to replace some emergency tariffs that were recently invalidated by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump stated that he would take this action under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, and these tariffs will be in addition to the existing tariffs.

This law allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 15% for 150 days on any country dealing with "large and serious" balance of payments issues. There are no requirements for investigations or other procedural restrictions.

The Supreme Court ruled that his previous global tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were illegal, stating that he exceeded his authority with that law.

“We have alternatives, great alternatives,” Trump said, adding, “Could be more money. We'll take in more money and we'll be a lot stronger for it.”

Trump also mentioned that his administration is starting several investigations under Section 301 related to unfair trade practices, aimed at protecting the U.S. from unfair practices by other countries and companies.

Though Trump’s shift to using Section 122 and launching new Section 301 investigations was expected, the 10% tariffs he announced will only last for 150 days, whereas Section 301 investigations usually take several months to finish.
