SEOUL, Oct 11 – A South Korean container ship has successfully completed the country's first commercial round trip to Europe through the Arctic. This milestone happened on Sunday, with hopes that it will help establish Busan as a key global maritime hub.

The vessel, named PanStar Acro, arrived at the southeastern port 50 days after it departed on August 22. Officials believe that using the Arctic route could shorten usual travel times by about a third.

President Lee Jae Myung has prioritized Arctic shipping, aiming to start regular services by 2030.

However, this initiative may create tensions with Western allies who want to keep Russia isolated due to its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The route passes along Russia's Arctic coast, and South Korea consulted with Moscow regarding the journey, including whether assistance might be needed for issues like ice navigation.

During its outbound trip, the ship navigated through Arctic waters and reached its first European port, Felixstowe in the UK, before visiting Rotterdam and Gdansk, returning home via the Arctic.

This trial voyage also showed some challenges. Before setting off, PanStar had aimed to carry about 1,300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo, but ended up transporting only 737 TEU along with empty containers.

Experts in the industry suggest that the success of this route will depend on dependable schedules, the costs of proceeding slowly to dodge ice, special insurance fees, and the extra fuel consumption involved.
