This year, the ship owner will equip new compact and eco-friendly cargo vessels with Inmarsat Maritime's bonded connectivity solution, ensuring they meet the demands for constant connectivity, unlimited data, and top-notch cyber security.
Inmarsat Maritime, which is part of Viasat (NASDAQ: VSAT) Communication Services, has finalized a deal with its long-time client Vega Reederei. The agreement will see 10 new diesel-electric coaster vessels outfitted with the innovative NexusWave connectivity service. It also includes advanced cyber security features like Fleet Secure Unified Threat Management (UTM) and Fleet Secure Endpoint.
The 89-meter short-sea general cargo ships, with a deadweight capacity of 3,800 tonnes, are set to be delivered by July 2026. They showcase a cutting-edge hull and propeller design aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Future modifications may include all-electric operations and the integration of Conoship’s wind-assisted propulsion system, eConowind, further boosting their environmental performance.
NexusWave by Inmarsat Maritime offers a fully managed bonded network solution that combines GX Ka-band, LEO, LTE, and L-band networks. It is designed to provide an “office-like” and “home-like” connectivity experience, delivering unlimited data, always-on connectivity with continuous backup, and a secure network infrastructure.
NexusWave will also enhance the performance of Vega’s new vessels, which incorporate advanced Operating Technology (OT) and a sophisticated electrical system that exceeds standard specifications for vessels of this size.
Leon Constantin von Plato, Head of the Technical Department at Vega Reederei, stated: “Our new diesel-electric coaster fleet showcases our dedication to modernizing operations for enhanced efficiency and eco-friendliness. Having a connectivity solution that aligns with our innovative approach, providing strong cyber security, unlimited data, and resilience, will help us achieve these objectives.”
Christian Fö lster, Sales Manager at Inmarsat Maritime, added: “Vega’s progressive strategy makes them ideal early adopters of NexusWave, a solution that meets current needs while anticipating future demands. We’ve seen considerable interest in this solution, and we are eager to demonstrate its capabilities.”
The deal between Inmarsat and Vega follows similar agreements with Auerbach Marine and Krey Schiffahrt GmbH to implement NexusWave. Inmarsat is also committed to an ongoing service improvement program, with the next phase integrating the next-generation ViaSat-3 Ka-band network. This upgrade will enhance Inmarsat’s existing services, offering even better capacity and speed for NexusWave customers.
