The Danish toy company LEGO is about to release a new collector’s set featuring Ane Maersk, the flagship vessel powered by methanol. The set, titled Maersk Dual-Fuel Container Vessel (40955), will be available starting March 1, and it brings the world’s first large methanol-fueled containership into the LEGO universe.
This set contains 1,513 pieces and comes out a little over two years after the real Ane Maersk was launched in January 2024 at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. With a capacity of 16,000 TEU, Ane Maersk is a significant step in the shipping industry's efforts to reduce carbon emissions as it is the first large containership powered by methanol. The ship is named after Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, who is the chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation.
LEGO's model accurately represents the ship's unique forward bridge, a design that Maersk states enhances container capacity and boosts port efficiency. The set includes an opening bridge section with crew quarters, transparent windows for the engine room, slide-out gangways, buildable containers, and a display plaque, making it perfect for display on a desk or shelf.
The actual Ane Maersk started its first journey using green methanol in early 2024, operating on the AE7 route between Asia and Europe. It was the first of 18 large ships powered by methanol that Maersk plans to introduce, as part of a larger order of dual-fuel vessels capable of running on green methanol and LNG.
For both LEGO and Maersk, this release brings back memories. The two companies previously collaborated in 2014 on the now-retired Maersk Triple-E set (10241), which was popular among fans and celebrated the largest container ships at that time.
The new set, designed for builders aged 12 and older, measures over 7 inches in height, 23.5 inches in length, and 4.5 inches in width when on its display stand. It serves as both a model and a significant milestone in maritime history, bridging the gap between shipping's quest for lower emissions and the lasting allure of LEGO bricks.
