A fire in the engine room of the Singapore-registered bulk carrier MANDY has led to the tragic deaths of two crew members and left a third in the hospital after an incident off the coast of China.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported that the fire started around 7:35 p.m. Singapore Time on Monday. Thankfully, the crew managed to put out the fire, avoiding a potentially worse situation.
All 25 crew members on board were from Myanmar, and there were no Singaporeans involved in the incident. Two crew members sadly lost their lives, while a third was taken to a medical facility on shore for care.
In their statement, the MPA expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. They noted, “MPA is in touch with the company and the relevant Chinese authorities to offer the needed support.”
Authorities confirmed that there was no pollution caused by the fire. The ship's operating company is now making arrangements to tow the MANDY to Yantai Port, China, where further inspections will likely take place.
The MPA has stated it will conduct a formal investigation into the cause of the fire. Engine room fires are among the most serious dangers in maritime operations, often linked to complex machinery, fuel systems, and limited escape routes for crew members.
