A container ship was hit by an unknown projectile in the Gulf, around 25 nautical miles south of Kish Island in Iran. The incident caused damage above the waterline, but the crew was unharmed, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Center.
UKMTO, which keeps track of shipping risks in the area, confirmed that all crew members are safe and accounted for, and there was no environmental damage reported. Authorities are looking into the incident.
This attack adds to a series of reported strikes and close calls involving commercial ships in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil and container trade.
While the specific vessel has not been identified officially, industry sources and reports suggest it might be the Qingdao Star, a Marshall Islands-flagged container ship that has been mentioned in past Iranian claims regarding attacks on shipping in the area. Those claims have not been verified.
Earlier this week, another container ship reported projectiles falling near it at the UAE port of Khor Fakkan, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran has claimed responsibility for other strikes that couldn't be confirmed.
