The U.S. Coast Guard's National Maritime Center (NMC) has made big strides in speeding up the processing of merchant mariner credential applications. Now, applicants can expect their complete applications to be processed in about four months as recovery efforts continue after the funding issues of 2026.
This new timeline starts immediately and is a notable improvement from the previous eight-month estimate shared in June. It's also a significant drop from the initial 8-to-12-month processing window provided when normal operations resumed in May after the lengthy shutdown.
The NMC attributed the faster processing times to various factors like increased production efforts, overtime, surge processing, workflow enhancements, and better allocation of personnel and resources aimed at clearing the backlog that built up during the funding lapse. These processing times do not include the time mariners spend waiting to take tests or provide extra information that is requested.
Even though application volumes are still higher than normal, the Coast Guard has noted signs that they are making progress towards returning to more typical processing times.
Applications will be handled on a first-in, first-out basis. The Coast Guard also mentioned that only applications with a clear connection to national defense will qualify for expedited processing.
The Coast Guard continues to urge mariners to submit their applications early through the Application Submission Portal (ASAP) to help manage any unexpected delays. Merchant Mariner Credential renewals can be post-dated by up to eight months, which allows mariners to renew their credentials well ahead of the expiration date. The NMC has also advised mariners to check the expiration dates of their medical certificates before applying, as these may expire on a different schedule compared to the Merchant Mariner Credentials. Submitting incomplete applications or paper forms can also lead to delays in processing.
This progress shows continued recovery from the significant disruptions caused by the 2026 funding lapse, which led the National Maritime Center to halt normal operations and resulted in a backlog of over 19,000 applications. When operations resumed in May, the Coast Guard had warned mariners that processing times could take eight to 12 months as they worked through the backlog. This estimate was later improved to eight months in June and further reduced to the current four-month timeline.
The Coast Guard remains dedicated to further shortening processing times while ensuring the safety, security, and professional standards of the U.S. merchant mariner credentialing system. Mariners are encouraged to keep an eye on the NMC website for more updates as operations continue to improve.
