On July 5, 2026, a cargo ship in the Red Sea reported an attack by armed assailants, highlighting ongoing security concerns for vessels operating in the Middle East.
The attack took place about 30 nautical miles (56 km) southwest of Al Hudaydah, Yemen. The UK Maritime Trade Operations, part of the Navy, announced the incident in a notice but did not reveal the name of the vessel. They are currently investigating the matter and have advised ships to proceed with caution.
The Red Sea has become an important route for Saudi oil exports after the conflict in Iran led to a closure of the Strait of Hormuz. However, in June, the Houthis, an Iranian-backed militant group controlling much of Yemen, announced a ban on Israeli ships passing through this area.
Meanwhile, although traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has increased following a US-Iran agreement aimed at ending the war, the number of ships navigating near Oman decreased recently. This drop occurred just after several vessels traveling that route made unexpected turns.
