First U.S.-Made Lithium Iron Phosphate Marine Battery Gets Approval
ABS has approved the design of Fleetzero's LeviathanTM Battery Energy Storage System, making it the first lithium iron phosphate (LFP) marine battery system made in the United States to receive classification approval.
This approval shows that ABS has reviewed the Leviathan system for marine use, allowing it to be used in future projects that need class-verified battery technology. The Leviathan system, built on LFP chemistry, operates at up to 1,000 VDC, supports a depth of discharge from 2% to 98%, and has an IP67 rating. Its modular, containerized design means it can be used in different types of vessels and applications.
“As the industry faces the challenges of electrification, class-verified battery technology is essential for gaining trust among owners and integrators,” said Gareth Burton, ABS Senior Vice President of Global Engineering. “The PDA for the Leviathan system shows the detailed technical work needed to safely introduce a new marine battery solution to the market.”
The first commercial use of the Leviathan system will be later this year. The initial project will use 10 MWh of Leviathan battery capacity as part of a vessel's transition to hybrid-electric propulsion.
