ABS has given an Approval in Principle (AIP) and completed a Basic Design Review (BDR) for a natural gas liquefaction system created by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the topside of a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit. These certifications were announced at Gastech 2026.

The topside facilities include all the process systems needed for FLNG operations. This consists of SENSE, a system designed by SHI that cools natural gas to very low temperatures for storage and transport, which is a key function of FLNG units. SENSE has already received AIP from ABS, and this new AIP and BDR confirm that SHI's design development (FEED) is practical for the intended purpose. The BDR involved a detailed technical review based on ABS Rules and standards.

“The creation of new liquefaction technologies is an important advancement for the FLNG supply chain. ABS is honored to support SHI as this review lays the groundwork to turn this technology from an idea into a real project,” said Matt Tremblay, Senior Vice President, Global Markets at ABS.

“This approval from ABS recognizes Samsung Heavy Industries' proprietary SENSE liquefaction technology and our extensive engineering skills. It provides a solid base for us to independently carry out complete FLNG EPC projects,” stated Joonho Min, Vice President of the Offshore Engineering Team at Samsung Heavy Industries.

As technologies rapidly develop, ABS is committed to supporting the safe and efficient deployment of new systems in the expanding FLNG sector. Learn more about how ABS is collaborating with this industry.
