ABS and the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy have signed an agreement to promote modern nuclear technology for use at sea. This collaboration focuses on floating power solutions, nuclear-powered ships, and the development of necessary infrastructure like ports and shipyards.
Some of the main goals include conducting studies to explore the feasibility of floating nuclear power and creating transportation routes for nuclear energy. They also aim to strengthen the U.S. shipbuilding industry to ensure safe construction and operation of nuclear-powered vessels. ABS will manage related initiatives through the U.S. Maritime Administration's (MARAD) U.S. Center for Maritime Innovation (USCMI), where it acts as Secretariat.
“Advanced nuclear technology is transitioning from concept to reality, and the maritime industry must adapt accordingly,” said John McDonald, ABS Chairman and CEO. “This agreement with the DOE builds on the significant work already in progress and paves the way for further advancements. By collaborating with the DOE and industry leaders, ABS is leading the way in integrating nuclear energy into the maritime sector. We are well-equipped to help make this technology a safe and practical option for commercial use.”
The DOE is at the forefront of U.S. government efforts to explore nuclear applications in maritime settings. Through this agreement, ABS will co-manage the Maritime Nuclear Applications Group (MNAG) and will offer technical, regulatory, economic, and policy guidance for feasibility studies. ABS will also work with the DOE to enhance coordination between agencies to create a robust U.S. maritime nuclear industry.
“Advanced nuclear technology could change the commercial maritime industry and create new opportunities for American innovation,” stated Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Ted Garrish. “The partnership between the Department of Energy and the American Bureau of Shipping will help us leverage decades of experience to safely introduce next-generation nuclear technologies into the maritime sector and position the U.S. to lead in this growing field.”
ABS is leading initiatives to incorporate nuclear energy into maritime uses. They have released the industry’s first comprehensive classification rules for floating nuclear power plants and have provided approvals in principle for several nuclear projects.
