  • ABB has been selected to provide an integrated power and propulsion system for the new semi-submersible vessel, Grand Tour, which will transport converter stations to the Pioneering Spirit, the world's largest construction vessel.

ABB has signed a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to supply an integrated power and propulsion system for the Grand Tour, a 230-meter long heavy transport vessel. This vessel has been ordered by Allseas, a global offshore contractor, and will play a vital role in the logistics of Europe’s offshore wind energy sector.

Set to launch in 2028, the Grand Tour will transport large converter stations from manufacturers in Asia and Europe to Allseas’ construction vessel, Pioneering Spirit, for installation. These converter stations are crucial for long-distance offshore power transmission as they convert AC electricity from turbines into DC power for transmission to the shore.

The Grand Tour will have key features such as power, control, and maneuverability, enabling it to carry loads of up to 40,000 metric tons on its stern deck. It will position itself next to the Pioneering Spirit and lower its main deck underwater to load the converter stations directly.

ABB's contract includes four 3.5MW Azipod® units, which will provide the necessary thrust for the Grand Tour’s bollard pull and dynamic positioning requirements. The 360-degree rotation of the Azipod® will aid in precise maneuvering at the bow of the Pioneering Spirit. These units will come with optimized nozzles for high efficiency during transit. With a gearless design, the Azipod® units minimize mechanical losses and fuel consumption, thus helping to cut emissions as well as reducing noise and vibration compared to traditional mechanical thrusters. This design also lessens the need for lubrication oil, reducing maintenance and operating costs while offering flexible design options for efficient installation.

The complete ABB package will include a medium-voltage AC power plant built in a closed ring configuration, managed by the PEMS™ power and energy management system along with an enhanced power plant protection system (EPPS). The powertrain solution will also feature remote condition monitoring and maintenance capabilities.
