Today, ABB announced a partnership with Ferrari Hypersail, combining ABB’s electrification knowledge with a bold offshore challenge. As the Electrification Partner, ABB will leverage its experience in marine power, Direct Current (DC) technology, and advanced electrical systems.
Ferrari Hypersail is an innovative 100-foot yacht that fully foils and exclusively uses renewable energy. It is designed to redefine sustainable marine performance by merging speed, durability, and safety with onboard energy production and management in a challenging environment.
ABB brings over 25 years of DC technology expertise to this collaboration, supported by a portfolio of more than 700 patents. As the Electrification Partner, ABB will assist Ferrari Hypersail in areas such as energy management, marine electrical systems, energy storage, and intelligent monitoring.
Ferrari Hypersail offers ABB a unique chance to showcase how advanced electrification, DC setups, and smart energy management can improve resilience and efficiency in extreme offshore settings. The challenge involves real-time balancing of renewable energy generation, storage, monitoring, and distribution, which is essential for developing next-generation industrial microgrids.

Project Leader Enrico Voltolini noted that the partnership provides the technical foundation needed for their mission. “Hypersail operates fully on renewable energy,” Voltolini stated. “It must be self-sufficient for weeks in the toughest ocean environments. Having ABB’s electrification expertise is a great operational benefit.”
Ferrari Hypersail will feature a DC architecture that acts as a high-performance, self-sufficient microgrid, using systems that operate at 48V and 800 VDC. It will generate, store, and manage power for essential navigation, foil controls, safety systems, and propulsion while enduring extreme cold, salt, pressure, and motion.
The ABB team will assist Ferrari Hypersail with DC system integration, real-time monitoring, smart power distribution, and resilience at sea. Insights gained from this project will guide the development of advanced power systems for various industries, including shipping, data centers, and renewable energy infrastructure.
