Swedish authorities have intercepted a bulk carrier flying the Liberian flag off the coast of Gothenburg after receiving reports that the ship had dumped waste in the Baltic Sea near Fårö.
Sweden's Civil Defence Minister, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, announced the operation on X, saying, “This afternoon, I learned that @Kustbevakningen has boarded a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier in Swedish waters near Gothenburg, which was seen disposing of waste in the Baltic Sea near Fårö.”
Bohlin described this action as “a clear example of how the Coast Guard actively monitors the seas to prevent environmental crimes.”
The minister did not identify the specific vessel involved. This incident took place in Swedish territorial waters, with the Coast Guard (Kustbevakningen) leading the enforcement effort.
In recent years, the Baltic Sea has seen strengthened environmental protections due to rising concerns about pollution and its effects on marine life. Illegal waste dumping by commercial ships continues to be a significant challenge for countries around the Baltic.
