On November 21, a fire and explosion on the container ship One Henry Hudson led to the evacuation of all crew members at San Pedro port, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters have found hazardous materials in multiple areas of the port, so they are using protective gear and breathing equipment as they respond.
Marine units are cooling the ship's exterior, and no one is allowed below deck. Footage from an ABC affiliate shows firefighting boats spraying water on the ship and on the burning containers on deck.
Operations at four of the seven container terminals at the port have been halted, and a safety zone has been set up around the vessel, as announced by port officials.
The LAFD has issued a shelter-in-place order for residents of San Pedro and Wilmington due to the hazardous materials situation caused by the fire.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass advised residents to stay indoors, keep windows shut, and turn off air conditioning systems.
The One Henry Hudson, which sails under a Panama flag, arrived in Los Angeles from Tokyo's Shinagawa port on Wednesday, as reported by LSEG data.
The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom mentioned on social media that it is coordinating with local authorities to support emergency responders.
Mayor Bass noted that over 100 firefighters are working to control the fire, and air quality is being monitored.
The vessel is docked at the Yusen Container Terminal, according to a statement from the Port of Los Angeles.
No injuries have been reported, and efforts to extinguish the fire are ongoing.
