The CMA CGM Group has signed an agreement to buy a 20% share in EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg. This move represents a big step for the French shipping company as it looks to expand its infrastructure in Northern Europe.
The deal is expected to finalize in the first half of 2026, pending necessary regulatory approvals. It positions CMA CGM to play a key role in one of the region's major port development projects.
This investment is part of CMA CGM's larger goal to grow its global terminal network, which currently includes interests in 64 terminals around the world. The Hamburg terminal has a capacity of 4 million TEUs and is vital for European trade. It accommodates some of CMA CGM's largest vessels, such as the 23,000 TEU LNG-powered ships that operate between Asia and Northern Europe.
The partnership will also support EUROGATE's Western Extension project. This ambitious plan will add about 38 hectares and around 1,050 meters of new quay wall to the Hamburg terminal. The expansion aims to support next-generation containerships and increase the terminal's capacity from about 4 million TEUs to nearly 6 million TEUs. Additionally, it will update existing areas to boost operational efficiency and intermodal connectivity.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, stated, “I am pleased to announce this new partnership with EUROGATE. It is an important step in developing Hamburg Port and helps maintain its role as a key gateway for European trade. Our involvement will enhance capacity, improve rail connections, and support sustainable operations. This shows our trust in Germany's long-term competitiveness and our dedication to strengthening resilient and efficient supply chains in Europe.”
The strategic investment also takes advantage of EUROGATE's direct rail link to EUROKOMBI, the largest intermodal terminal in Germany.
CMA CGM has a presence in Germany that goes beyond just terminal operations. The company opened offices in Hamburg and Bremen in 1991 and now has nine offices across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Through its logistics division, CEVA Logistics, the Group manages over 500,000 square meters of warehouse space and employs around 5,200 people in Germany. CMA CGM Inland Services and the Duisburg Trimodal Terminal provide integrated intermodal solutions.
The Hamburg terminal currently hosts 23 weekly vessel calls at three main German ports: Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven, making it a crucial hub in CMA CGM's European network.
